ByteDance AI companion refers to an AI-powered virtual companion developed by ByteDance, designed to interact with users through conversational AI and personalized digital personas. These companions can simulate friendly conversations, respond to user preferences, and provide entertainment or emotional interaction.
ByteDance and Alibaba pull AI companion features
The withdrawal precedes new rules that will strengthen oversight of human-like AI services and go into force in mid-July.
In anticipation of new Chinese restrictions controlling human-AI interactions, ByteDance Ltd. and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. are discontinuing capabilities that allow users to create and communicate with AI companions.
According to an app notification viewed by bloom berg News, ByteDance’s doubt, the most well-known AI chatbot in China, will discontinue a feature that lets users create their own AI identities on July 15. Users were referred to a different, stand-alone companion app by the notice.
According to media reports, big platforms such as Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s yuan and Alibaba’s Owen have issued similar alerts.
Although some businesses caution that strict regulations would stifle innovation, the new guidelines constitute one of the most extensive sets of laws meant to prevent AI’s possible negative effects. They are a reflection of growing concern around the world about the psychological effects of conversational AI.
ByteDance AI companion key features

Personalized interaction — users could build an ongoing relationship around a selected persona rather than simply use a general-purpose chatbot.
Voice interaction — doubt’s real time voice technology enabled more natural back-and-forth spoken conversations, including the ability to listen while speaking.
Character-based experiences — users could interact with AI personas designed around particular personalities and roles.
Conversation history/continuity — users could maintain long-running conversations with their customized companions; after the 2026 shutdown, doubt users were given temporary read-only access to existing companion conversations.
Chinese users of AI companions bereft after government tightens regulations

Over the course of two years, she had sent and received around 700,000 words, but she was never able to say goodbye.
When big Chinese tech companies recently discontinued their well-liked AI companion services in order to comply with new government regulations, Li, 24, wasn’t the only person grieving the loss of a virtual companion.
“I still miss him, but it was like our parents forced us to be apart,” Li remarked.
In China, AI companions might be anything from virtual replicas of departed loved ones to amorous partners.
The new rule, which went into effect on July 15, prohibits AI platforms from producing content that can cause users to make dubious judgments by manipulating their emotions or that might cause children and teenagers to develop unhealthy habits or intense emotions.
Among the businesses discontinuing their AI companion services is ByteDance, the creator of TikTok. Alibaba, the massive online retailer, and Tencent, the company behind the well-known social media app WeChat, are two more.
Chinese regulators may have been concerned about American suicides.
According to the new regulations, AI platforms must warn users about the risks of relying too much on these programs. For instance, “replacing social interaction,” or acting as a stand-in for in-person or telephone conversations, cannot be one of an online service’s goals.
According to Yolanda Ma, an expert on AI governance, China has a history of paternalistic government laws intended to foresee such issues. She cited a few instances of young people in the United States taking their own lives after engaging with AI companions.
